Blessing of Gomel (Thanksgiving) for Survivors
When an individual has experienced a life-threatening ordeal - an illness, a traffic accident, or a long journey - and has safely returned to their community, with humility s/he publicly expresses gratitude. For men it is traditional to recite this blessing following an aliyah to the Torah. The community responds by affirming the grace of this miracle and asks that this renewal of life be for everything that is good.
